Kay

People of Anfield

Hello, my name is Kay. I’m 76 years young and for the last 8 years I’ve lived in Anfield. It’s a very comfortable place for me as it’s similar to Tottenham, London where I grew up. (Yes, I’m a Spur’s supporter). One of my great childhood memories was when I was packed off to Sunday school with pennies for the collection.  I spent the money on sweets and played on the swings in Woodland’s park.  I think my dad must have twigged what I was up to, but he never said anything.

I live in an old, terraced house off Breck Road.  I love these old houses. Sometimes my daughter Emma lives with me and Tim, my younger son, lives in the Dingle with his partner. My older son Trevor lives in Doncaster with his six-year-old daughter Audrey. They’re all very important to me but they say that my two dogs Clodagh and Froggy are more important. Well, they are my constant companions.

When I was younger I wanted to make the whole world better. As I’ve got older I realise that this isn’t possible, but I do the best I can with what I have. My two dogs were rescues and to make up for their tough starts they now live a life of luxury – home cooked meals, sleeping on the bed and not a care in the world other than barking at anyone who dares to walk past our house.  I’m aware of animals who have little to nothing and make sure that my dogs have the most perfect life that I can give them.

I believe in living lightly on our planet, Mother Earth. I am a vegan. I’m a Pagan following the Druid way. This honours nature, our ancestors and the gods and goddesses of old.  I follow what is called the eight-fold year with eight rituals celebrating the changing seasons and what they represent.

I belong to Liverpool Friends of Palestine supporting an end to the war in Gaza where so many have suffered.  I knitted my hat in the colours of the Palestine flag and wear it on marches. I also knitted my jumper and Clodagh’s matching collar. My Nan taught me to knit many decades ago and it’s one of the many crafts that give me pleasure along with patchwork and dressmaking. I very recently started doing the repairs and alterations at Kitty’s. We’re never too old to start something new.

The patchwork in the picture is a wall hanging that I made years ago for the Green Stall in the wool market in Doncaster. My stall sold a mix of organic, fair trade, vegan and vegetarian items and I won the greenest market trader award in 2008. Tim and I went to the Houses of Parliament to collect our award.

It’s as relevant today as it was then. Now I’m retired but seem as busy as ever. Onwards and upwards!
